FREEZE.COM CHOOSES ZEDO’S Ad SERVING TECHNOLOGY TO AUTO-OPTIMIZE HIGH AD VOLUMES

SAN FRANCISCO, December 15, 2004 — ZEDO, Inc. announced today that Freeze.com has chosen ZEDO’s Third Generation Ad Serving ™ Technology for its online ad management, based on Automatic-optimization to serve high volumes for highly targeted advertising content.

Freeze.com, the leading source for high quality wall papers and screen savers on the Internet, has launched ZEDO as an advertiser solution across its entire network. ZEDO’s Auto-optimization feature will enable Freeze.com to maximize ROI on their ad dollars by automatically prioritizing ads by profit and thus, enhance the effectiveness of its campaigns significantly across channels.

ZEDO is the first Ad Serving Company to offer this feature in conjunction with a more efficient and reliable architecture, that makes it highly effective.

“The Automatic-Optimization developed by ZEDO is a very powerful tool as it allows us to deliver the most effective ads automatically,” said Robert Weber, CEO of Freeze.com, parent company of ScreenSaver.com the web’s largest distributor of high quality screen savers. “ZEDO has been an excellent partner, with custom development tying our backend systems into the Ad Server and providing cutting-edge technology that allows us to maximize ROI especially at very high volumes.”

Roy de Souza, CEO of ZEDO, Inc., noted “Automatic-Optimization was designed by ZEDO as a revenue enhancing feature and was customized to specifications by Freeze.com. David and Goliath

David and Goliath

Smart Business
Belgium Edition
By Claudine Descheemaecker
February, 2002

Last week I read an interesting article: “Are you still paying for unsold banner ads?” I couldn’t believe what I was reading. what website would be willing to pay for unsold space. After some research I was even more surprised finding out that this is common practice in th e internet advertising business. Goliath “Double Click” invoices websites both for sold and unsold ad space without a doubt. One of the reasons is, that their servers are hit in both cases(1)

Well David or the start up ZEDO – who wrote the article that I saw – found a brilliant solut ion. ZEDO developed a technology a la napster that makes the clients’ browser intelligent. Instead of using central hardware and data central a la Double Click, ZEDO uses content deli very networks like Akamai and Speedera for sending/storing the ad that has been selected on the browser of the user. In case of unsold ad space, the browser knows that he does not need to ask for a new banner ad but needs to show a blank ad or a house ad. Does this make a difference? That’s the least you can tell, it cuts advertising cost by half!

Will this David win the game from GOLIATH? Only God knows. Is it a brilliant solution? You bet it is. besides it looks like the VISIONARIES of the internet ADVERTISING industry agree with me on this. it looks like Larry Braitman and esther Dyson joined the Board of the company,… So it might be that we are looking at a battle that Double Click might loose. After all, everything is possible in the US.

(1) The former generation of ad serving technologies like Double Clicks’ works as followed: The browser sends a request to a double click server that looks up what ad needs to be showe d to the user. Once the ad has been selected, the server sends a request to another server who sends the gi f to the browser of the user.
In the 3rd generation ad serving technologies, the selection happens on the browser, who sends a request for a gif to the CDN (content delivery network eg Akamai, Speedera)

ZEDO, Inc., a leading third-generation ad serving company, announced earlier this week that they would deliver ‘unsold’ ads for their publishers at no charge. This includes the complimentary delivery of unproductive remnant inventory, unsold house and default ads run by the publisher. The move comes just weeks after major tech players DoubleClick and 24/7 Real Media announced that they would follow L90’s lead and charge publishers a nominal fee for the delivery of their default inventory.

At the same time, the company additionally trumpeted the signing of major new contracts with StreamCast Networks – creators of Morpheus, Boston Media and Shoxygen.com, Silicon India, Nutrio, and others. The deals in question promise to boost Zedo’s delivery volume to an impressive 6 billion ads a month. Other major customers are expected to be announced in the next few weeks – perhaps indicativ e of the lure posed by Zedo’s inexpensive service in a market increasingly dominated by the big three, whose premiums have only grow n throughout the industry’s initial consolidation.

Reiterating the service’s key value proposition, Zedo CEO Roy de Souza said, “The efficiency of Zedo’s architecture allows [the company] to provide the pricing and pricing structure that customers want…Publishers only pay Zedo for ad serving when they are making money from the ads served – this is what our customers need to succeed in today’s market.”

“ZEDO gives us the functionality to better service our advertisers with the ability to targe t, traffic and report vital information allowing StreamCast Networks to optimize campaigns and reach desired audiences,” said Trey Bowles, Director of Sales and Marketing StreamCast Networks (http://www.musiccity.com ). “ZEDO provides substantial cost savings to StreamCast because we do not pay for unsold ads.”

Although accurate data concerning the proportion of inventory that goes unsold is hard to co me by, thhe sentiment expressed on ad-centric bulletin boards, ezines and trade publications would seem to put this figure at betwee n 40-60% of an indie publisher’s available inventory, suggesting that even a small charge placed on the delivery on unsold ads has the potential to significantly deplete a small publisher’s revenue.

In addition to low prices and free serving of unsold ads, Zedo’s ad serving platform is repo rted to provide the delivery of media at rates far above those reached by centrally-managed systems. Zedo’s unique architecture (styled after the efficient peer-to-peer data exchanges) allows f or customer-specific features and immense flexibility including the reporting of how long ads are visible on a page; off-line ad ser ving; easy to use pop under serving with accurate frequency caps; and more.

Zedo, which uses peer-to-peer software to serve online advertisements, said Friday that it s igned deals to deliver ads for file-sharing network StreamCast Networks, creators of Morpheus, and Boston Media, among others. The agreements push Zedo’s ad-serving counts to more than 6 billion ads a month, the San Fra ncisco-based company said. It added that its ad-delivery deals come at no cost to publishers for “unsold” ads–a common occurrence as the advertising market has withered on the Web.

Zedo says that because it has an efficient architecture for its ad network, relying on decen tralized servers, it is able to deliver ads at a low cost. The ad-serving product also lets publishers target and report on ads, including statistics o n the duration of an ad viewed. Founded in 1999, Zedo also signed on Shoxygen.com, Silicon India and Nutrio as customers.
